Abingdon Wine Estate
Abingdon raised R3000 in their first raffle and funds went to the helicopter project in KwaZulu Natal.
Abingdon Wine Estate – Single Vineyard Estate Wines Abingdon Wine Estate is located in Lions River in the picturesque KwaZulu-Natal Midlands – a unique pioneering estate which has positioned itself as a serious single vineyard boutique wine producer . The farm was bought in 2000 by owners and winemakers, Ian & Jane Smorthwaite, with the first vines planted in 2004. Situated at 1140m above sea level, the estate has in excess of 3 ha under vine and this includes the only certified single vineyards in the entire Kwa-Zulu Natal region. Five varieties are at present in the ground – Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
The KZN Midlands has a high altitude, summer rainfall Continental climate which is very different from the Mediterranean climate of the Western Cape, an area synonymous with South African wines. The wines produced at Abingdon showpiece this climate aspect with a distinctive old world taste profile, and are showing much promise due to their distinctive terroir. Abingdon has had, since its first harvest in 2007, over 20 wines certified by the wine and spirit board and carry the IPW “integrity and sustainability stamp of approval .
The High Timber restaurant – London
Another project in the pipe line is in London. The High Timber restaurant, on the banks of the River Thames will be raising funds for Celebrate Life in 2014.They do an Africa based charity every year. The charity i.e. Celebrate Life SA, print little table cards to say why the restaurant adds 0ne GBP to every table. This year they did Sentebale and next year they are doing Starfish. The High Timber Restaurant is owned by Gary and Cathy Jordan of Jordan wine estate in Stellenbosch. Another lovely gesture from a wine Estate.
